FAQs
What is a Portable Air Conditioner?
A portable air conditioner (PAC) is a mobile air conditioning unit that doesn’t require permanent installation, unlike window or central air conditioning systems. It uses an included window kit, exhaust hose, and connectors to remove heat from a room, lowering the temperature and reducing humidity. PACs are ideal for cooling single rooms, dorms, small offices, server rooms, or garages where traditional air conditioning isn’t feasible or cost-effective. Our PACs are compatible with standard 115 Volt/60 Hertz household outlets.
Is a Portable Air Conditioner Right for Me?
Portable air conditioners are a great option for cooling specific rooms, offering an energy-efficient alternative to whole-house central air. If you have areas that require cooling but conventional AC units don’t fit the space or budget, a PAC may be the solution. They’re perfect for rooms where installing window units isn’t possible and allow for localized cooling, helping reduce energy costs.
How Does a Portable Air Conditioner Work?
PACs pull warm air from the room or outside via the intake hose or filter. The air is cooled by the unit’s compressor and condenser coil, then pushed back into the room, while the compressed hot air is vented outside through an exhaust hose.
Do Portable Air Conditioners Require Outside Venting?
Yes, all PACs need to vent hot air outside. They come with a window venting kit, but other venting options, like through a sliding door, wall, or drop ceiling, are possible. Custom modifications may be needed, and the vent hose should not be extended beyond 9 feet.
Can a Portable Air Conditioner Run Without a Vent?
If the unit is not vented, it will blow cold air from the front and hot air from the back, leading to no overall room temperature change. Proper venting is required to effectively cool the room.
Can a Portable Air Conditioner Be Vented to an Attic?
Yes, but venting into an attic adds humidity, so it's essential to have adequate space and ventilation. For better moisture control, consider using continuous drainage from the air conditioner’s drain plug.
Do Portable Air Conditioners Collect Water/Need to Be Drained?
PACs dehumidify as they cool, and most models automatically evaporate the moisture they collect. However, in very humid environments, the water reservoir may need manual draining or continuous drainage via the upper drain port.
Are Portable Air Conditioners Energy Efficient?
Portable air conditioners have an Energy Efficiency Ratio (EER), which measures energy efficiency. The higher the EER, the more energy-efficient the unit is. To find the EER, divide the BTU rating by the unit’s wattage.
What is a BTU?
BTU stands for British Thermal Unit, which is the amount of energy required to cool or heat air. Higher BTU ratings generally mean more cooling power.
What is a Dual-Hose Portable Air Conditioner?
A dual-hose PAC has an intake hose that draws in air from outside to cool the unit’s compressor and condenser, and an exhaust hose that vents hot air. This design allows the unit to cool a room more quickly and prevent negative air pressure. When external temperatures are high, the intake hose can be covered for single-hose operation.
How Do I Use the Window Venting Kit?
The window venting kit allows the exhaust hose to vent hot air outside while preventing warm air from leaking back in. These kits are adjustable to fit most windows and can be trimmed or extended for larger or smaller window spaces.
What is an Exhaust Hose?
The exhaust hose is a flexible tube that expels hot air from the PAC. While it can be removed when the unit isn’t in cooling mode, it must be attached when cooling or heating. Extending the hose beyond 9 feet is not recommended for optimal performance.
What is an Intake Hose (Dual-Hose Models Only)?
The intake hose draws outside air to cool the PAC’s internal components. Dual-hose units cool rooms faster and maintain better air pressure compared to single-hose models. For added flexibility, the intake hose can be covered for single-hose operation when needed.
Is a Portable Air Cooler the Same as a Portable Air Conditioner?
No, portable air coolers (or evaporative coolers) are not the same as PACs. Air coolers use water to lower the air’s temperature but don’t reduce the overall temperature of the room. PACs actively cool the room by removing hot air and venting it outside, while air coolers provide localized cooling in their direct airstream.
Can I Use a Portable Air Conditioner to Cool My Server Room?
Yes! Portable air conditioners are ideal for cooling server rooms, which often have higher cooling needs than other spaces. A PAC can supplement or enhance your existing cooling system, ensuring your servers stay at an optimal temperature.
